Hangzhou-Haining Intercity Railway 杭海城际铁路

The Hangzhou-Haining Intercity Railway, also known as the Hangzhou to Haining Intercity Railway or the Hang-Hai Intercity (City Rail), is one of the first batch of PPP demonstration projects of the Ministry of Finance of the People’s Republic of China. It is operated and managed by the Zhejiang Provincial Rail Transit Operation Management Group Co., Ltd. Hangzhou Metro also claims this line as its own “Hang-Hai Line” in some occasions and has incorporated it into the planned routes for the 2022 Asian Games. The construction of the Hangzhou-Haining Intercity Railway started on December 15, 2016. The line is 48.18 kilometers long and includes 13 stations, namely Yuhang High-speed Railway Station, Xucun Station, Haining West High-speed Railway Station, Chang’an Station (East Zhejiang College Station), Chang’an East Station, Zhouwangmiao Station, Yanguan Station, Tongjiu Road Station, Xieqiao Station, Leather City Station, Haichang Road Station, Zhejiang University International College Station, and Biyun Station (which is temporarily not open).

The Hangzhou-Haining Intercity Railway starts from the Yuhang High-speed Railway Station in Hangzhou and heads east through Xucun, Chang’an Town, Zhouwangmiao, Yanguan Town, and Xieqiao, entering the main urban area of Haining City. After passing the China Leather City, it follows Haizhou East Road to Provincial Road 08 (East Ring Road). The railway interchanges with Hangzhou Metro Line 1 (future Line 9), and features 13 stations along its route, including 5 underground stations and 8 elevated stations. The underground section runs through Yuhang territory and the main urban area of Haining, while the sections underneath the Shanghai-Hangzhou High-speed Railway and expressways are constructed in U-shaped ground channels, with the remaining sections being elevated.

The Hangzhou-Haining Intercity Railway represents a significant strategic initiative for Haining City to adapt to the needs of new urbanization, meet the more convenient travel needs of the people, proactively embrace the influence of larger cities, actively participate in regional integration, and promote better and faster economic and social development. As the largest investment in transportation infrastructure in Haining’s history, the project is of great strategic importance for improving the comprehensive transportation network, promoting industrial development, enhancing the urban landscape, and further elevating the city’s overall capacity and level.
