The Chengdu-Kunming Railway, commonly referred to as the Cheng-Kun line, is a first-class national railway in China that serves both passengers and freight, connecting the provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan. The railway extends from north to south and is one of the main lines in the southwestern region of China, also being an integral part of the country’s “Three Horizontals and Five Verticals” railway network. It starts from Chengdu Station in the north and reaches Kunming Station in the south, covering a total distance of 1,096 kilometers with 124 stations of various sizes along the route. The designed speed for the railway is 80 kilometers per hour, with some sections upgraded to allow speeds up to 120 kilometers per hour after renovations.
The Cheng-Kun Railway begins in the Chengdu Plain of Western Sichuan, crossing rivers like the Min River and the Qingyi River. It passes through Emei, follows the Dadu River, and traverses the Greater and Lesser Liang Mountains. The railway crosses the Nu River to reach Xichang, spans the Anning River, crosses the Jinsha River, and meanders over thirty times through the Longchuan River Gorge, cutting across the Hengduan Mountains, and finally reaches the shores of Dian Lake in Kunming.
Along its journey, the railway passes through many regions including Pengshan, Meishan, Jiajiang, Emei, Ebian, Ganluo, Xide, Xichang, Dechang, Miyi, Yuanmou, Lufeng, and Anning. By connecting with the Baoji-Chengdu Railway, the Cheng-Kun line can extend northward towards the greater Northwest China, and southward directly to Kunming, reaching the southwestern frontiers and linking with countries in Southeast Asia. This forms a major transportation corridor that traverses north to south and connects with several other east-west rail lines. It plays a vital role in military preparedness, holds strategic significance for industrial production, and integrates key industrial bases such as the coal base in Liupanshui, the steel base in Panzhihua, and the arms industry in Chengdu, fostering a triangular economic cycle where mining and manufacturing industries complement each other. To this day, the Cheng-Kun Railway supports a number of military and heavy industrial cities, such as Panzhihua and Xichang, creating what has been known for over 40 years as the “Industrial Corridor” of Western Sichuan.
