The Chengdu-Lanzhou Railway is a vital component of China’s mid-to-long-term railway network plan and serves as a railway link between Chengdu in Sichuan Province and Lanzhou in Gansu Province. The railway is designed for passenger trains to travel at speeds of up to 200 km/h, with a total length of 573 kilometers. It is a mixed passenger and freight line, categorized as a first-class, double-track, electrified high-speed railway. Construction started on February 26, 2011. Once completed, travel time from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou will be reduced to approximately 2 hours, and to Lanzhou to about 4 hours, thereby bringing an end to the history of no railway access in northwestern Sichuan.
The Chengdu-Lanzhou Railway begins in Chengdu and passes through Shifang, Mianzhu, Mao County, and Songpan to Jiuzhaigou, extending north to the Hada Station on the under-construction Lanzhou-Chongqing Railway. The route covers a total length of 463 kilometers, with 378 kilometers in Sichuan Province and 85 kilometers in Gansu Province. Starting from Chengdu and passing through Mao County, Songpan, and Jiuzhaigou County, the railway joins the Lanzhou-Chongqing Railway at Hada Station before reaching its final destination in Lanzhou. This railway is another “Sky Road” built at an altitude of over 3000 meters above sea level, ascending from the 500-meter elevation of the Chengdu Plain to the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau at an altitude of 3400 meters. The railway route traverses 10 counties, cities, and districts, featuring 16 new stations with a main line of 457.6 kilometers. The line is characterized by a high proportion of bridge and tunnel engineering, with many long and large tunnels, and the engineering geology presents distinct features often described as “four extremes and three highs.”
To the north, the Chengdu-Lanzhou Railway connects with the Lanzhou-Chongqing Railway and, together with the existing Baoji-Chengdu Railway, the planned Sichuan-Qinghai Railway, and the Sichuan-Tibet Railway, it will create an inter-regional mainline railway corridor that connects the northwest and southwest with the southern coastal areas of China. This will end the era of no railway service in the northwestern region of Sichuan.
