Dazhou-Wanzhou Railway, referred to as Dazhou-Wanzhou Railway, is a national railway Class I passenger and freight railway in China connecting Dazhou City, Sichuan Province and Wanzhou District, Chongqing City. It is the first railway to the Three Gorges Reservoir Area. The railway is also an important part of the Chongqing-Shanghai along-river railway channel among the “eight vertical and eight horizontal” trunk lines planned by the Ministry of Railways during the “Tenth Five-Year Plan” period. The Dawan Railway was first built on October 31, 1997; it was fully paved on October 23, 2002; it was officially put into operation on January 11, 2004; it started electrification transformation on February 8, 2010; it was completed on November 2010 The renovation was completed and put into operation on January 1st.
The Dazhou-Wanzhou Railway starts from the Dazhou end of the Xiangyu Railway in the west and ends at Longbao, Wanzhou in the east. The line runs through Dazhou and Kaijiang in Sichuan, Liangping and Wanzhou in Chongqing and other places. The Dawan Railway is an important part of the Chongqing-Shanghai riverside railway channel among the “eight vertical and eight horizontal” main lines of China’s railways planned during the “Tenth Five-Year Plan” period by the Ministry of Railways. It plays a “finishing point” role in improving the railway network in western China. . The Dawan Railway has shortened the distance for materials from western and northern Sichuan to central and southern China and eastern China via the Baocheng, Chengdu and Xiangyu railways. It has also alleviated the railway transportation pressure at the Chongqing railway hub and the north entrance of Sichuan. It has also accelerated the planning of the Southwest Railway to the East. Channel construction has played a role in promoting this. The opening of the Dawanzhou Railway has given the Three Gorges Reservoir area, which has always used waterways, a new mode of transportation. It plays an indispensable and important role in improving Wanzhou’s urban functions and accelerating the pace of Wanzhou’s construction of a big city. The Dawan Railway has helped enterprises in the Three Gorges Reservoir area reduce transportation costs, speed up product turnover, and allocate resources calmly; and for the majority of farmers, the Dawan Railway has provided a more convenient way of travel for the labor force to move out for work. More importantly, the Dawan Railway is an important infrastructure for the developmental resettlement of the Three Gorges Project and has the important mission of promoting large-scale resettlement in the reservoir area. The opening of the entire Dawan Railway to traffic has effectively changed the backwardness of the reservoir area, which has low road standards, high freight prices, high energy consumption, poor water transportation equipment, and small transportation capacity.
